Information On Demand Technical Unconference

IBM is hosting an unique industry event where YOU set the agenda. Make your voice heard at this participant-driven unconference to be held during Information On Demand 2012 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. The Technical Unconference is open to conference attendees, students, professors, as well as local IT pros, developers, and architects.

You and your fellow attendees will lead and participate in discussions around all facets of the future of data. We invite you to submit your ideas below for what topics should be on the Unconference agenda and vote on the best of your peers’ ideas. If your proposal is to give one of the lightning talks please say “Lightning” in the subject.

To kick off the participant discussions, here are some big questions to think about:

•How should APIs & Programming languages evolve to better serve developer needs?
•What’s so different about big data? How is big data changing your company?
•Should we control how big data is used? Is privacy by design possible?
•What skills & tools do data scientists need? How will the role evolve?

What is an Unconference??

An Unconference is an event where the participants create the agenda. The Information On Demand Technical Unconference is a participant-driven conference with little structure, where the attendees drive the agenda and freely form new discussions and sub-groups as ideas emerge. You and the other attendees will suggest and then select the topics through a voting process.

We’ll begin with an hour of lightning talks: each presenter gets 5 minutes to cover a timely and relevant topic. After the lightning talks, we will break into one or more open discussion groups to explore the topics you’ve chosen. This is the opportunity to share how you are shaping the future of data and learn how your peers are doing the same. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to join – and create – the conversation.

  1. An Innovative Approach to Cognos Navigation

Provide a business process focussed report launcher to enrich user experience while accessing BI content from Cognos Connection. Very often, organizing extensive content requires a deep folder structure. This results in reports being too hard to find and too many clicks to get to them.Using html items in Report Studio, portal pages in Cognos connection and MetaManager Portlet Blaster tool, a sophisticated Navigation Tool can be deployed to users to replace the native Public Folder navigation.

                            • Lightning - Considering a scalable MPP like IBM Netezza, should we consider migrating away from traditional ETL?

With in-the-box power far more scalable and efficient for large-scale data processing, the ETL tools are no longer able to keep up and are much more logistically complex. Even using an ETL tool to "pushdown" is too inefficient to honor the MPP's power

                              • Going beyond sentiment: Is there still room left for improving NLP, or is it time to find a new way to understand language?

Social Analytics platforms in particular have been rabidly pursuing Sentiment since their beginning, but it seems the algorithms consistently leave something to be desired. Has anyone finally cracked the code? Are there new approaches that we should look at, beyond +/0/-?

                                • Radically scalable data processing with IBM Netezza

Processing tens of billions of rows invites MPP-level scalability for data processing. This has many facets, including pushing an MPP-platform to its most efficient threshold. Also to manage the resources, logistically and operationally scale without losing control of the logical flows, and dealing with capacity, data management and operational integrity.
