Information On Demand Technical Unconference

IBM is hosting an unique industry event where YOU set the agenda. Make your voice heard at this participant-driven unconference to be held during Information On Demand 2012 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. The Technical Unconference is open to conference attendees, students, professors, as well as local IT pros, developers, and architects.

You and your fellow attendees will lead and participate in discussions around all facets of the future of data. We invite you to submit your ideas below for what topics should be on the Unconference agenda and vote on the best of your peers’ ideas. If your proposal is to give one of the lightning talks please say “Lightning” in the subject.

To kick off the participant discussions, here are some big questions to think about:

•How should APIs & Programming languages evolve to better serve developer needs?
•What’s so different about big data? How is big data changing your company?
•Should we control how big data is used? Is privacy by design possible?
•What skills & tools do data scientists need? How will the role evolve?

What is an Unconference??

An Unconference is an event where the participants create the agenda. The Information On Demand Technical Unconference is a participant-driven conference with little structure, where the attendees drive the agenda and freely form new discussions and sub-groups as ideas emerge. You and the other attendees will suggest and then select the topics through a voting process.

We’ll begin with an hour of lightning talks: each presenter gets 5 minutes to cover a timely and relevant topic. After the lightning talks, we will break into one or more open discussion groups to explore the topics you’ve chosen. This is the opportunity to share how you are shaping the future of data and learn how your peers are doing the same. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to join – and create – the conversation.

  1. Taming the Data Conformance Challenge

Today, most organizations struggle to conform disparate source data in a cost-effective, timely and usable form. Whether the focus is transactional or analytical use, variations of employing ETL and other related tools for data quality and master/reference data management purposes still comprise the vast majority of time, effort and cost. What forward looking techniques/tools can be applied to improve this situation?

How do you recover and stand up your Cognos BI Platform within hours rather than weeks when one of your Cognos servers crashed and you don't have a failover architecture. Does that mean you reinstall and reconfigure and recustomise your Cognos environment from scratch?

      • Data extraction of unstructured data while maintaining logical document composition

Data extraction tools that are used to operate on unstructured documents, such as Microsoft Office and IBM Symphony, ignore logical composition expressed by document creators. Logical composition of a document refers to Header, Footer, Body, custom properties, ...

The logical composition is essential when operating on the extracted data. For example if I am classifying a document it might be more important that I find some string of text in a header versus footer versus body.

The idea here is to do data extraction while preserving logical document composition.

wondering if there are other paties interested in having IBM ECM technology cloud enabled so a customer would get full flexibility where to deploy. And on the other hand a service provider could market the solution on its own.

                  • Data Normalization Considered Harmful?

In relational databases, data normalization is a methodology that minimizes data redundancy to safeguard against logical and structural problems, such as update anomalies. Relational database normalization continues to be taught and practiced widely. Normalization was devised in the 1970s when the assumptions about data management and computer systems were very different from what they are today.
In this discussion we want to examine the problems associated with data normalization, such as complexity, performance, versioning, and the difficulty of mapping real-world business records to normalized data in a changing world. Also, the World Wide Web has impacted the creation and exchange…

Provide a business process focussed report launcher to enrich user experience while accessing BI content from Cognos Connection. Very often, organizing extensive content requires a deep folder structure. This results in reports being too hard to find and too many clicks to get to them.Using html items in Report Studio, portal pages in Cognos connection and MetaManager Portlet Blaster tool, a sophisticated Navigation Tool can be deployed to users to replace the native Public Folder navigation.

                                • Lightning - Considering a scalable MPP like IBM Netezza, should we consider migrating away from traditional ETL?

With in-the-box power far more scalable and efficient for large-scale data processing, the ETL tools are no longer able to keep up and are much more logistically complex. Even using an ETL tool to "pushdown" is too inefficient to honor the MPP's power

                                  • Radically scalable data processing with IBM Netezza

Processing tens of billions of rows invites MPP-level scalability for data processing. This has many facets, including pushing an MPP-platform to its most efficient threshold. Also to manage the resources, logistically and operationally scale without losing control of the logical flows, and dealing with capacity, data management and operational integrity.

                                    • Need for Automated ETL Process Control and Monitoring

Almost all ETL projects face several challenges in ensuring smooth operations and trusted information delivery. The entire task is time-consuming and intricate, and teams tend to miss on the SLAs, resulting in loss of business or lapses in regulatory compliance. Maintainability and supportability requirements need to be standardized enabling the development team to concentrate on business requirements and support team to concentrate on improvement initiatives rather than manual operational monitoring . The operational process needs to be automated and ensures consistency to deliver the required information at the right time to the organization for effective decision making.
