Information On Demand Technical Unconference

IBM is hosting an unique industry event where YOU set the agenda. Make your voice heard at this participant-driven unconference to be held during Information On Demand 2012 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. The Technical Unconference is open to conference attendees, students, professors, as well as local IT pros, developers, and architects.

You and your fellow attendees will lead and participate in discussions around all facets of the future of data. We invite you to submit your ideas below for what topics should be on the Unconference agenda and vote on the best of your peers’ ideas. If your proposal is to give one of the lightning talks please say “Lightning” in the subject.

To kick off the participant discussions, here are some big questions to think about:

•How should APIs & Programming languages evolve to better serve developer needs?
•What’s so different about big data? How is big data changing your company?
•Should we control how big data is used? Is privacy by design possible?
•What skills & tools do data scientists need? How will the role evolve?

What is an Unconference??

An Unconference is an event where the participants create the agenda. The Information On Demand Technical Unconference is a participant-driven conference with little structure, where the attendees drive the agenda and freely form new discussions and sub-groups as ideas emerge. You and the other attendees will suggest and then select the topics through a voting process.

We’ll begin with an hour of lightning talks: each presenter gets 5 minutes to cover a timely and relevant topic. After the lightning talks, we will break into one or more open discussion groups to explore the topics you’ve chosen. This is the opportunity to share how you are shaping the future of data and learn how your peers are doing the same. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to join – and create – the conversation.

      • IBM PureSystems: What is an expert integrated system anyway?

Earlier this year, IBM introduced the PureSystems family, a new class of systems that combine the flexibility of general purpose systems, the elasticity of cloud computing, and simplicity of an appliance with IBM's integrated expertise. In this talk, we'll cover what you need to know about PureSystems solutions to begin talking about them with your teams, clients and partners.

Banks, Finance and Insurance Organisations (firms) are unable to use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and other Social Media tools due to FSA, SEC and FINRA regulations that govern the use of Social Media specific to 'Advertising, Supervision, Approval and Record Keeping'.
SocialView from Integritie is a Social Media communication governance and control tool that enables firms to comply with these regulations. Indeed it is the only tool that complies fully with all these regulations.

The Estimated Income Gauge (EIG) project leverages on IBM MDMS v9.0.1 and it's aimed to achieve a SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) based infrastructure providing the capability to evaluate a compliance score among taxpayers' declared income and effectively acquired expenses and goods during a certain fiscal year. The achievement is to prevent tax evasion and demonstrate tax fiddle.
The IBM Lab Services proposal is to make it a reusable asset and a common framework capable to address similar use-cases in different business contexts.

              • Data extraction of unstructured data while maintaining logical document composition

Data extraction tools that are used to operate on unstructured documents, such as Microsoft Office and IBM Symphony, ignore logical composition expressed by document creators. Logical composition of a document refers to Header, Footer, Body, custom properties, ...

The logical composition is essential when operating on the extracted data. For example if I am classifying a document it might be more important that I find some string of text in a header versus footer versus body.

The idea here is to do data extraction while preserving logical document composition.

IBM has enabled the Oracle PL/SQL APIs in DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows v9.7; 97% of Oracle application code will work unmodified. So, how best to migrate the Oracle data to DB2? The IBM Data Migration Tool (IDMT) fosters a batch migration which requires an application outage - backup, IDMT, restore, SET INTEGRITY - which can last for hours or days depending on the volume of data and complexity of the data model. • The future of Business Analytics is Social

To date the enterprise has yet to capitalize on the value of integrating social interactions ("systems of engagements") with enterprise data ("systems of records").

Internet Social Apps are capturing every human interaction, ever button clicked, opinion expressed, piece of content created, read, tagged, or commented on, and applying analytics in order to deliver services that are smarter and more personalized. So my question...

With the enterprise drowning in information and sitting on rich under-utilized networks of interactions between people, content, processes, and applications, is it time that we get serious about enterprise social analytics?

With this shift from transactions to interactions, from systems of record to systems of engagement, its important we don't loose perspective on capitalizing on current investments. We will show how to maximize participation in these communities while leveraging your existing DB2 infrastructure to get NoSQL into the enterprise. DB2 customers can leverage the administration, operations, and tooling they've invested in, maintain the security levels their customers expect,…

                        • Taming the Data Conformance Challenge

Today, most organizations struggle to conform disparate source data in a cost-effective, timely and usable form. Whether the focus is transactional or analytical use, variations of employing ETL and other related tools for data quality and master/reference data management purposes still comprise the vast majority of time, effort and cost. What forward looking techniques/tools can be applied to improve this situation?

                            • Data Normalization Considered Harmful?

In relational databases, data normalization is a methodology that minimizes data redundancy to safeguard against logical and structural problems, such as update anomalies. Relational database normalization continues to be taught and practiced widely. Normalization was devised in the 1970s when the assumptions about data management and computer systems were very different from what they are today.
In this discussion we want to examine the problems associated with data normalization, such as complexity, performance, versioning, and the difficulty of mapping real-world business records to normalized data in a changing world. Also, the World Wide Web has impacted the creation and exchange…

They are creating vibrant ecosystems, and in the process, reaping big rewards. Today the most successful companies are operating under an entirely different business model–-one predicated on collaboration, rapid development, emerging technologies, and externally driven innovation. The Age of the Platform introduces and describes a critical new business model, one essential to survive in today’s increasingly fragmented…

                                  • Title: Horizontally Scalable Database & Application Architecture Deployment

Subtitle: Leveraging IBM DB2 pureScale With IBM Power System's PowerVM Virtualization
Abstract: For deployment of many applications, it is a challenge to properly size the database server along with the business logic server CPU & memory requirements. When using the cluster scalable DB2 pureScale database server solution on the IBM Power System server platform supporting PowerVM virtualization, it is possible to define a building block approach to simultaneously add both database server capacity along with application business logic server capacity. This session will describe a deployment option for the horizontally scalable Enovia V6 PLM application from Dassault Systemes as an…

                                    • Deploying an ECM solution stack in any kind of cloud

wondering if there are other paties interested in having IBM ECM technology cloud enabled so a customer would get full flexibility where to deploy. And on the other hand a service provider could market the solution on its own.
